How to Register a Trademark in Pakistan

Quick answer

Register a trademark in Pakistan with the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan): run a search to confirm availability, file an application under the correct goods/services class with your mark and applicant details, respond to any examination objections, and after publication and the opposition window, receive your registration certificate. The process commonly takes many months.

Step by step

  1. Search existing marks. Check the trademark registry to ensure your name/logo isn't already registered in your class — this avoids rejection and disputes.
  2. Identify the right class(es). Trademarks are registered under the Nice classification by goods/services. Choose every class your business actually needs.
  3. File the application. Submit the application with a clear representation of the mark, applicant details, and class(es) to IPO-Pakistan, with the fee.
  4. Handle examination and publication. Respond to any objections, then the mark is published in the Trade Marks Journal for the opposition period.
  5. Receive registration. If unopposed (or after opposition is resolved), you receive the registration certificate, valid for ten years and renewable.

Frequently asked questions

+How long is a registered trademark valid?

Ten years from the application date, renewable indefinitely for further ten-year periods.

+Should I register before or after launching?

Earlier is safer — registering before you build brand equity reduces the risk of someone else claiming the mark.
